Chapter Eight

“Is Drew Spencer here, please?” the woman queried in a businesslike tone. “I’ve been sent by the court to speak with him.”

What was Drew’s case worker doing here—on a Saturday, and apparently unannounced? Stephanie was certain Drew would have mentioned it if he thought she’d be coming around.

Stephanie looked at the duster in her hand, her ratty blue T-shirt, gray sweatpants and purple toe socks, and then—last but definitely not least—the toys the twins had strewn from one end of the living room to the other. There was no possible way to hide any of that.

She groaned inwardly, hoping her distress didn’t show on her face. Never let the enemy see you sweat, and all that.

At least she’d put Quincy in the backyard. Otherwise the case worker might have had the kind of welcome she herself had had the first time she’d visited the Spencers. That particular meeting might not have gone as well with this woman as it had with her. Who knew if the investigator liked dogs or not?

This was Drew’s worst nightmare come to life. He’d talked about being caught off guard, and this situation definitely qualified as that.

“Uh,” she murmured, buying a moment to think, “please have a seat on the sofa while I run to the kitchen and get you that coffee.” She gestured toward the couch and spurred herself into action. She needed to warn Drew before he accidentally waltzed into the living room and had a heart attack.

Drew looked up from his papers as Stephanie skidded into the room, sliding on her socks. Drew had overdone it just a little bit with the vinyl cleaner and the floor was out-and-out slippery. She was aiming for the cupboard where the coffee mugs were housed, and she grasped the counter for support, adrenaline causing her breath to be quick and uneven as she turned to face him.

He was as casually dressed as Stephanie had ever seen him—jeans and a tattered, grease-stained white T-shirt that looked as if he’d been working under the hood of a car with it. His feet were bare. There was a day’s worth of stubble on his chin, which was actually quite attractive, if she’d had time to admire it. He was usually so conscientious about being clean-shaven. His hair looked as if he’d been scrubbing his fingers through it, which he probably had been, since he was clearly deep in thought. When he looked up, his reading glasses magnified the brilliant green of his eyes.

“What’s up?” he asked, tapping his pen on the table. “You look like something scared the life out of you. Did you find a spider on the windowsill or something?”

A spider? First of all, she was absolutely fine dealing with bugs. And secondly, the woman currently sitting in the living room was much, much worse than the average, run-of-the-mill insect.

She pressed her knuckles onto the table and leaned toward him. “Okay, I
